After some brief discussion with David I have attempted to draft an updated LDP policy position on Welfare. It incorporates extracts from tax reform 30/30, the existing welfare policy statement, ideas presented in this discussion thus far as well as my own thinking. LDP Welfare Principles
Where practical the LDP believes in promoting a society that fosters individual responsibility and civic institutions in preference to government funded welfare. People that are healthy and capable should as far as possible provide for their own material needs through personal effort, thrift and financial independence. Individuals should be nurtured with incentives and recognition so that they in turn are encouraged to support their immediate and extended family, to contribute to their communities, and to lending a hand to others in times of need. Australian communities already demonstrate an enormous level of good will to those in need through institutions such as the voluntary bush fire services and surf life saving clubs as well as numerous other voluntary organisations.
